Theatre Nurse and ODP jobs and recruitment across Scotland

Whether you’re looking for operating department practitioner (ODP) jobs or theatre nurse jobs, our specialist team at RMR can provide an exciting range of vacancies to suit you. Specialising in scrub, anaesthetic and recovery roles throughout Scotland, our team works closely with multiple NHS and private theatre departments.

What is a Theatre Nurse?

A theatre nurse is responsible for the care of patients of all ages within operating theatres, anaesthetic and recovery areas. Working alongside Surgeons, Anaesthetists, Operating Department Practitioners (ODPs) and the wider perioperative team, their role may see them involved with procedures on wards or in clinics. Theatre nurse duties may include carrying out pre-operative assessments, assisting the anaesthetist, providing support throughout surgery, monitoring patients’ health on recovery and instilling trust and confidence in the patient before and after surgery.

What does an ODP do?

ODP jobs may involve acting as first assistant to the surgeon or surgical assistant. Further training in this role could cover areas such as anaesthetics, pharmacology and infection control.

Theatre Nurse specialties

As with many other nursing positions, Theatre Nurses will specialise in specific areas of the surgical world. Anaesthetics Nurses will primarily support the Anaesthetist but may also prepare any specialist equipment, devices or drugs. They are also responsible for assessing the patient prior to surgery.

Scrub Nurses are responsible for several elements of the surgical process, including the surgical instruments, equipment and swabs used. They will also act as a link between the surgical team and other parts of the theatre or hospital.

Recovery Nurses will provide the appropriate care and treatment to patients as they recover from the effects of anaesthesia and/or surgery. Their role also includes assessing the care given during each of the perioperative phases.
