Martin Richardson

Hospital Nurse

Meet new dad Martin Richardson from Wishaw who loves nursing, a good box set, and a game of football.

What’s the best bit about being a nurse?

I work in acute medicine, so my favourite part of the job is seeing people get better. It’s very rewarding to look after patients who are acutely ill and watch them recover and get stronger every day.

I also like being on my feet and meeting new people. I used to work in pensions and be stuck in an office all day, so deciding to change careers was a smart move. I qualified in 2012 from the University of the West of Scotland and have never looked back.

What’s it like working for RMR?

I joined RMR about 18 months ago now and find them really good to work for. Very flexible and genuinely a nice bunch of people. I’ve recently become a dad for the first time, my son Charlie is five months old, and I work three twelve hour shifts a week which works well with my family life.

People might think that working for an agency is risky but RMR have plenty of shifts on offer and they really do take care of you. They’re so friendly and take an interest in getting to know you as an individual so that the shifts they offer you fit your needs. Sometimes I prefer to work nights, other times I prefer days and it’s easy to mix it up to what suits you best.

Three words that describe you?

Level headed, approachable and calm.

What’s on your bucket list?

I’ve never been one for a bucket list, I’m more of a live in the moment kind of guy.

Outside of work how do you spend your time?

I get to spend plenty of time with my son which is great and enjoy socialising with friends and family. I go to the gym and play and watch football. I’m not much of a reader but I’m into box sets like The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones. I’m just catching up on the new series of Power which has me hooked after two episodes.

What tune is guaranteed to get you on the dance floor?

Anything by Tiesto. Dance music always gets the party started for me!

If you could be someone else for the day who would you be and why?

That’s a good question. Hmmm, I’ll go with Jon Snow from Game of Thrones because he’s King of the North, an underdog, plus he’s brave and loyal. Yeah, he’s a cool guy.

What’s the best advice you’d give to someone considering working for RMR?

I’d tell them to give it a go. Phone up, have a conversation and find out more. It can be tough to join an agency. But I’ve found that RMR do everything to support you and they make a huge effort to find work that you want to do, when you want to do it. It’s ideal.
